WINTHROP HARBOR – With nearly one million visitors each year and hundreds of local jobs tied to its success, North Point Marina is a cornerstone of Northeast Illinois’ tourism economy. Following concerns about a potential closure, state and local leaders including State Senator Mary Edly-Allen have collaborated to secure a new operating agreement to keep the marina open for the 2026 boating season.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has announced that SkipperBud’s will serve as the new operator of North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor, ensuring continued access to one of the region’s most important recreational and economic assets.
“When stakeholders such as government officials and community members collaborate effectively, we achieve more for Illinoisans,” said Edly-Allen (D-Grayslake). “Thank you to all who collaborated on a solution for our entire community.”
North Point Marina, the largest marina on the Great Lakes, features more than 1,500 slips and serves as a hub for boating, fishing and outdoor recreation along Lake Michigan. The marina supports local restaurants, tourism and seasonal employment, making its continued operation critical to the region.
“The reopening of North Point Marina is a defining moment for our community and a testament to what can be achieved through strong partnerships and relentless advocacy,” said Dr. Michael Bruno, mayor of the Village of Winthrop Harbor. “This marina is not only the heart of our local economy, but a cornerstone of our identity as a Lake Michigan community. Its successful opening for the 2026 season ensures that our residents, businesses, and visitors can once again enjoy everything that makes Winthrop Harbor special."
After the previous concession agreement ended in 2025, uncertainty around the marina’s future raised concerns about economic impacts and potential job losses. In response, IDNR worked with state and local stakeholders to secure an interim operator and ensure the marina remains open while long-term plans are developed.
“IDNR knows how important North Point Marina is to the community as an economic driver and a unique recreational opportunity. I want to thank the boaters and the Winthrop Harbor community for their outpouring of concern about the marina’s future and their continued support for the site,” said IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie. “I also want to thank SkipperBud’s for their patience in working through the complicated process of taking over management responsibilities. Today is a great day for North Point Marina.”
SkipperBud’s, a longtime presence at North Point Marina with decades of experience in marina operations, will oversee day-to-day management, maintenance and customer experience through March 2029. Their familiarity with the marina and commitment to quality service will help ensure a smooth transition and a successful upcoming season.
The marina is expected to reopen in spring 2026 with full amenities, including slip rentals, boat and watercraft rentals, dining options and recreational activities.
